Birds Nest Crafts

After we read "Birdhouse for Rent" by Harriet Zeifert, we began talking about how amazing it is that birds can build such complex nests of all different shapes and sizes with materials from nature and other random objects they find. If you can imagine for a minute building a home for security, shelter and a place for nesting eggs....what a challenge! Especially when you are so very small with only your beak and legs as tools for construction!
So, with this in mind..we searched our yard and crafting supplies and took on the task of making our own nest. Well!, this is no easy task let me tell you! It took us several tries to get the sticks, yarn, ripped newspaper and feathers (store bought) to intertwine and stay put. We used glue instead of mud and began to weave and assemble, trying this and that...needless to say- what a job!
If you are studying birds, I encourage you to try this hands-on learning experience. It was an eye opener and a new found appreciation, of once again, how miraculous nature is!
